2016.10.20 – ESC European Storm Overview / Warnings / Watches

Here is today’s ESC European windstorm overview, issued October 20th 2016 at 11:00 UTC.

There are currently two storm systems in the region.

Severe storm NICOLE is located at the east coast of Greenland. Its central pressure is 967hPa, an increase of 6 hPa since the last ESC overview at 21:40UTC, peak gusts currently exceed 130km/h. A gust of 109km/h has been registered in Greenland. The system is forecast to remain more or less stationary on the eastern coast of Greenland. NICOLE is currently, and is forecast to continue to affect Iceland within the 24-hour forecast period. Hurricane-forced storm gusts over 130km/h are possible early in the 24-hour forecast, and the wind speeds will generally decrease. Exposed places such as mountain peaks and coasts are especially at risk. A severe storm warning has been issued for Iceland due to the imminent threat from the severe storm NICOLE.

A new, nameless severe storm is located between Canada and Greenland. Its central pressure is 988hPa, and this is the first ESC overview in which this storm is being tracked. Peak gusts currently exceed 120km/h. The storm is currently over the ocean and not affecting any European landmasses. The storm may affect Iceland within the 48-hour forecast period for watches, but there is still substantial uncertainty about the future of this storm system.

Below are the ESC overview as well as warnings/watches maps.
