Recrod low temperatures in Germany and Austria to be expected?

Currently M.I.L.K. is measuring -5.0°C in Berlin Steglitz, while at the airport Schönefeld -6°C are being reported. But it will change to significantly colder temperatures. Tomorrow morning in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern large areas will have -10°C, Berlin will have a minimum of -6 or -7°C. In East Tyrol -22°C are expected.

On Friday temperatures under -10°C are expected in most of Meckenburg-Vorpommern and also NE Brandenburg; in Berlin a minimum temperature of once again -6 or -7°C is expected. In Austriaq, though, it will be warmer again: minimum -18°C in S Tyrol.

The temperatures will drop on Saturday. Then even Berlin, Hamburg, Sachsen anhalt, Schleswig-hohlstein and NRW will be affected, of course as well Brandenburg and Meckenburg-vorpommern. There temperatures will drop to -14°C, in Berlin -11°C. In SE Tyrol -23°C are to be expected.

Sunday the cold in Germany will spread; Sachsen and Hessen will then be affected by under -10°C as well. Berlin is expected to cool down to -14°C. Austria will not be very cold.

Monday it will be a little warmer in Germany, still -12°C in Berlin and Brandenburg, -21°C in Tyrol.

ICE RAIN WARNING

M.I.L.K. is now in it’s 6th year of existing, and in all that time, there was never such a risk for traffic chaos in all of E Germany and especially in Berlin due to ice rain.
A WARNING MEANS THAT THE EVENT IS EITHER NOW OCCURING, OR FORECAST TO OCCUR WITHIN 24 HOURS AFTER THE WARNING HAS BEEN ISSUED.
—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–
WARNING VALID FROM: NOW
WARNING VALID UNTIL: MONDAY, 09CET
IN THAT TIME ICE RAIN IS FORECAST. CURRENTLY THERE IS (ICE) RAIN OR SNOW ON THE RADAR, HOWEVER NOT IN BERLIN BUT WITHIN 200KM SURROUNDING, AND WITHING 100KM MEANING THAT ICE RAIN COULD BEGIN TO FALL ANY TIME; THE THREAT IS STILL THERE. BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN YOU DRIVE; THE ROADS COULD BE ICY EVEN WITHOUT RAIN.
—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–
WARNING VALID FROM: MONDAY, 16CET
WARNING VALID UNTIL: TUESDAY, 4CET
THIS WILL BE THE LARGER ICE RAIN PERIOD, AND IT WILL BE LIKELY THAT IT CAUSES A BIG CHAOS ON ROADS AND A FEW MAJOR CRASHS. PLEASE TRY NOT TO DRIVE OR WALK ON (OR NEXT TO) THE STREET DURING THAT TIME, REMEMBER THAT ALSO THE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION (BUS) IS NOT IMMUNE AGAINST ICE RAIN.
—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–´
For M.I.L.K. members that have weather instruments or anyone else that has weather instruments outside, the ice rain may cause malfunctions like the freezing of anemometers and wind vanes. Termometers should be but in a place where ice rain can not change the readings by freezing around the thermometer.
—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–
TODAY M.I.L.K. WILL HAVE A LIVE DATA COVERAGE FROM THE STATION IN BERLIN STEGLITZ AT ://www.milk-weather.org/weather%20data%20index.htm
PLEASE KEEP INFORMED.
THE ICE RAIN SYMBOL WILL BE KEPT THERE THE WHOLE DAY LONG, SINCE THE DATA WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY TRANSFERED AND NO WEATHER OBSERVATIONS CAN BE DONE DURING THE DAY.
NOTE THAT IN THE CASE THAT ICE RAIN WILL BEGIN THE WIND VANE AND POSSIBLY ANEMOMETER WILL FREEZE, THE OMBROMETER (PRECIPITATION INSTRUMET) MIGHT AS WELL TAKE DAMAGE.

Weather forecast – Germany and Austria

While currently it is mainly raining in most areas of Germany, in Austria it is currently, dry, but that will change within the next few days. Only in far NE Germany it is currently snowing, except for some exposed mountain peaks in central Germany or the “Erzgebirge”.

This forecast will mainly address weather threats and unusual or changing weather conditions.

Thursday, in the late evening severe rainfall will occur in SW Germany. Then, Friday, snow will gradually begin to move into the western states of Austria, but there will still not be so much new snow; very light to only light snow is to be expected. Later on Friday, the snow will intensify in E Tyrol, then there will be moderate snow in those regions.

Sunday morning in E Brandenburg, there will be ice rain. See our next post: Ice rain expected widely throughout N Germany.

World Wide Weather – WWW

This is a weather overview, based on the data that anyone can retreive on www.milk-weather.org/MILK-home-meteorologist.htm

In Europe a very structurized low pressure area is currently located over the baltic states. W of it there is an extensive area without clouds, a high pressure area that will bring cooler air (finally) to central Europe. SW of the Iberean Peninsula there is a very de-organized low pressure area.

Currently N Germany is covered in showers, but there is no lightning activity (except for a single lightning bolt that was registered). The S is meanwhile covered in rain from one of the fronts of the baltic low. The shower that is the strongest and also caused the one flash of lightning is currently located ESE of Hannover. The showers are movin straight from W to E. In Austria it is currently raining N of the Alps and in Tyrol, although the highest intesnisites are reached in Upper Austria and Salzburg. The radar clearly shows that the rain comes from non-convective sheet clouds.

Lightning activity in Europe is very low. There have only been 2 lightnings that were registered within the last two hours.

The current temperatures in the USA span from -17°C at the great lakes to 24°C in Florida. It is, though, generally warmest in the SW and coolest in the NE, although the cold polar air is now moving away again. Except for the pacific coast all of Canada is in the negatives as well. Cuba is currently between 24 and 28°C warm.

In South America it is currently very warm. Brazil is on average, temperatures up to 28°C, but in central Argentina temperatures are reaching 37°C.  On the other side of the Andes the temperature is often times below 20°C in Chile. At the southernmost weather station of south America the temperature is currently5°C.

Japan currently stretches from temperatures around -5°C in the N to around 4°C in the SE. Currently it is especiall cold in Mongolia and E Siberia. In Mongolia the current lowest temperature is -33°C, in E Siberia even -53°C.

Unfortunately MILK cannot acces much of the data of SE Asia. Temperatures there are currently between 12°C in the N and 29°C on isolated islands.

Australia is of course very warm currently, but surprisingly cool. While one or two weeks ago temperatures exceeded 40°C once again, now the hightest currently measured value is 34°C.

In Africa many countries do not give access to their weather network, ot do ot even have a weather station network. Temperatures in the far N of Africa are currently under 10°C in vast regions.

Around the poar ice cap it is surprisingly warm currently. Lowest temperatures, as already mentioned, are currently registered in E Siberia. But it is under -30°C cold in most of the regions, including N Scandinavia.

At the antarctic coast, temperatures between -7 and +8°C are currently being measured. Very warm.

There is “a lot of weather” going on in Europe currently. In central Germany moderate snow is being reported. Around it, mostly towards the E and SE, vast areas are covered with rain. In Scandinavia and Russia it is snowing over wide areas. In pretty much the rest of europe it is hazy or foggy.

The wind is currently strongest in N Germany, stronger than in any other area of Europe. The wind there is blowing from the W, right into a low pressure system over the Baltic states.

Precipitation was reported throughout central Europe, and in the Atlantic, where the largest ammounts fell.

Temperatures in Europe currently span from -32°C in N Scandinavia to 16°C in Greece. Most of Europe is just around the freezing point.

Quick satellite analysis

Based on www.milk-weather.org/MILK-home-meteorologist.htm

Currently there is a low pressure area in the north sea, which is going to cause storm wind speeds in Berlin. For subscribers of the MILK weather forecasts for W Berlin, Kleinmachnow, Stahnsdorf, Potsdam and Teltow there has already been a wind warning and a storm watch issued. This low pressure area has an extensive front, that reaches as far as to the Azores. The low pressure area seems to have convective clouds inside. A further low pressure area W of Iceland seems very elongated. Just check back your self!

26.4.2013, Convective clouds in Berlin and Brandenburg

There was slight convection forecast, but it was better than anyone thought…

I went out, expecting some small cumuli forming. But what was actually there was more than just “some small cumuli”…

It was an amazingly chaotic sky. It was great (for April it is very very great)

There were huge towers, and really thin castellanus…

Unfortunately the sight to a cumulus congestus or a cumulonimbus calvus was blocked by the sports hall…

The heat was dazzling anyway, as you can see here… But the clouds!

Sometimes it looked as if it would start to rain any moment, but it stayed dry (or not, because it was very humid)…

The cloud came closer, but it did not rain (here)

In the afternoon in Berlin there were cumulonimbus clouds, but none of them uncharged themselves over Berlin.

Impressive Cumulonimbus, April 11th 2013, Berlin

This is the first actual stormchasing report on this webiste, since now I have managed to get the MILK gallery running. For anyone interested in becoming a member with MILK just visit our forum by clicking HERE.

In the morning I checked the forecasts and there was a slight chance for convective events. But when I looked out of the window in the afternoon, I did not expect such an event.  It turned out to be a very nice shower cell, but the good thing was that I stayed out of the precipitation and was able to take pictures with my better camera. My second camera is weather proof, but I did not need that one…

Just enjoy the images. If you want them without the watermark, go to

www.milk-weather.org/gallery and you can download them.
